Back in 2021 my buddy Ian Stanley invited me to to speak at his event and share my investing strategy.
However most of what I recommended was NOT your typical investments.
It wasn’t stocks…
Or real estate…
Or crypto…
All those things are great (and I have money in all of them).
But the #1 investment I recommended (and this is especially relevant if we wind up in a recession) is something far less known.
In fact, this investment gave me a 116x return in just a few years!
It made me a multi-millionaire…
And allowed me to do cool things like sit courtside for the NBA finals…
Donate $25,000 to my favorite dog rescues…
And even help one of my friends pay all his medical bills when he had Stage 4 cancer…
So what was this great investment?
Like I said, it wasn’t stocks, real estate or crypto…
It was investing in a money-making skill.
Specifically, I invested a lot of money to get good at copywriting.
And as a result of that investment, my income went through the roof.
In 2008 I made around $40k that year.
In 2013, I made around $200k…
In 2015, I made over $700k…
And in 2016 I made just shy of $2.2 million.
Which was life-changing money for me.
I never thought I’d be the kind of guy making 7-figures.
But I did it.
And I’ve been able to make 7-figures pretty much every year since then (except for 2018 when I took a full year sabatical).
So when I spoke at Ian’s event last year, I really emphasized this point about investing in your skills.
Why?
Because in my mind, it’s the best investment you can make.
If you go from making $50k a year to $200k a year, because your copy skills get better, that’s an ROI you’re not going to get anywhere else.
This is so obvious to me now…
But it took a long time for me to grasp this concept.
And here’s the thing…
You won’t read about this in most personal finance books.
They’ll tell you to just invest your money in an index fund…
Or to buy some real estate…
And while both of those things are fine and dandy…
They aren’t going to increase your income like investing in a money-making skill will.
I mean, I’ve seen this firsthand with the copywriters and business owners I’ve coached…
Krista Edsall went from being a bartender making $50k a year to a copywriter who’s on pace to make $120k in her second year…
Scott Mills went from a good writer making $200k a year, and he’s now on pace to hit over $420k this year…
