Every Sunday morning I like to write about 3 random things that are on my mind.
Sometimes these things are about business…
Sometimes they’re about life…
And other times they’re just truly random.
So with that said…
Let’s hop into the first thing on my mind this morning.
1. My “diamond hands” are no more. I officially sold all my crypto
Last week after a lot of thought, I decided to sell all the crypto I own (at a major loss).
Why?
Is it because I don’t believe in crypto anymore?
Am I worried about all the FUD going on in the crypto world?
Nope.
None of that affected my decision.
The real reason I sold it was because crypto is way down right now…
And by selling I was able to offset other capital gains I have with my crypto losses.
Basically I’m getting a sizeable payment for selling my stake in Copy Accelerator this year.
And I would normally have to pay capital gains taxes on that (which would be around 22%).
However, since I sold my crypto…
I’m able to realize those losses and offset a large amount of the capital gains I’m getting from selling my stake in Copy Accelerator.
So I’ll save around $155k in taxes because of that.
And I’ll just buy back my crypto at the current lower prices.
Which is nice.
So even though the whole market went to shit…
There’s a small silver lining if you have other capital gains you’re looking to offset.
Alright let’s jump to the second thing on my mind.
This one is about investing as well.
2. I’m planning to move about 25-30% of my portfolio into real estate over the next year
Right now my portfolio looks like this…
75% – Stocks
12.5% – Crypto (before I sold)
12.5% – Cash
And my plan over the next year is to get 25-30% of this into real estate.
Why?
Because real estate is a good hedge.
And it’ll help balance out the volatility I have with stocks and crypto.
I don’t know exactly what kind of real estate I’m gonna buy, but my main criteria is that it needs to be passive.
I’m not interested in managing rentals (even with a management company).
I want it to be hands off.
So I’ll prolly look at syndicates…
Or triple net lease properties…
Overall my goal is to get around a 10% return on these.
That way my portfolio looks more like this…
50% stocks
30% real estate
20% crypto
Anyways…
I’ve been dragging my feet on real estate (besides the house I live in) so it’s time to get that rolling and to get diversified with real estate.
Alright let’s do one more of these before we wrap up for the day.
3. July 4th is supposed to be a celebration for America, but I’m more worried than ever about the direction we’re heading
The political climate in the US is about as ugly as I’ve seen it in my lifetime.
No one agrees on anything.
No one wants to govern.
The politicians only care about “dunking” on the other side and winning the media battle.
They don’t care about policy.
Or the long term health of the country.
All the politicians that cared about those things have been squeezed out.
Now you have to be a conspiracy theorist, bowing at Trump’s feet to get elected as a Republican…
Or a fringe socialist who thinks capitalism and success are evil to get elected as a Democrat…
It’s ugly…
And it’s trending to get worse.
No one has rational thought anymore.
If someone on your “political team” does something despicable, nobody holds them accountable.
You just rationalize it and say “well they’re still better than the other option”.
It’s disheartening.
There’s no principles involved.
So the scummiest people stay in power.
And like I said, I don’t see this improving anytime soon.
It’ll probably get worse.
I don’t know how this all ends…
But my hope is that people (on both sides) start to think of the principles that made this country great.
Things like freedom, limited government and individual responsibility.
Sure there’s some downsides to these things in the short term.
But I think they’re essential to succeed in the long term.
Cause without us putting those principles first…
It’s only a matter of time before we turn into an authoritarian state like China.
I know that’s not exactly a happy 4th of July message.
But it’s been on my mind…
And while we have a lot to celebrate, we also have a lot of work to do to get back to those principles.
Make sense?
I hope so.
Cause I need to wrap this up and hit the gym.
Hope you got a nugget or two out of this.
Enjoy your Sunday.
