Every Sunday morning I like to write about 3 random things that are on my mind.

Sometimes these things are about business…

Sometimes they’re about life…

And other times they’re just completely random.

However…

Right now, I’m in the middle of a launch for my “13 most profitable email hooks” training that’s taking place on Wednesday.

Let’s dig in to the first thought on my mind this morning…

1. All of the top copywriters spend most of their time coming up with a GOOD hook

The best copywriters know that without a good hook, their copy is not gonna stand out.

It’ll blend in.

And if it blends in, it ain’t gonna sell.

This is why copywriters like Gary Halbert were famous for spending two weeks simply diddling around (going for walks, hanging on his boat, browsing the shelves at the library) and waiting for an idea to come to him. 

That’s because the idea (aka the hook) is what will determine if your copy is gonna thrive or die.

It’s that important.

Let’s hop to the second thought on my mind this morning…

2.  Some hooks are “evergreen” and continue to work just as well today as they did 20 or 30 years ago

One of the hooks I use over and over again is the “contrarian” hook…

Which I learned from the great Gary Bencivenga.

Gary very smartly used a headline on an alternative health promo back in the day that read…

“The Case Against Alternative Medicine”

The doctor who was in the promo was a big advocate of alternative medicine…

So it was quite jarring when people got the direct mail piece with his face on it titled “the case against alternative medicine”.

They were not expecting that…

And as a result, people read it in droves.

And it ended up being a huge homerun..

I can’t remember exactly when Gary wrote that promo (I believe it was in the 90’s), but that contrarian hook crushed 30 years ago, and it still crushes today. 

So the big thing to understand here is that the best hooks are evergreen…

And they will continue to work for years and years…

Alright let’s hop to the last thing on my mind this morning…

3. I’ve noticed that the best marketers in direct response are also the BEST students

Whenever I run a launch I always scroll through the buyer names in Samcart to get a feel for who’s buying…

Well after the first day of my current launch, I checked the buyer list and three names immediately stood out to me…

Jerrod Harlan (who’s in my opinion one of the best email copywriters in the world, and currently writes all the emails for Russell Brunson and ClickFunnels)…

Paul Martinez (he’s written copy for Money Map Press, Natural Health Sherpa and has been an A-list copywriter for the last 15 years)…

And last but not least, Gary Bencivenga (who most people consider the greatest direct response copywriter to ever live)
