Let’s have a little fun today.
Here’s 5 things you probably don’t know about me.
——
1. Back when I was 9, I got really into collecting baseball cards. I still remember the card I wanted more than anything was the Ken Griffey Jr Upper Deck rookie card.
This was the KING of cards at the time.
And I think it was like $100+.
Which for a 9-year-old was a lot of money.
But I wanted the card so bad, I started selling a bunch of my other cards. And I started mowing lawns for $5 to try and make enough money.
I’m not sure if it was the lack of money…
Or if I just lost interest in cards…
But I never ended up getting the card.
However, learning to wheel-and-deal baseball cards was kind of my first taste of making money (and it only grew from there).

2. From the age of 6 until I was in highschool, playing golf was my life.
I practiced everyday…
I spent 90 minutes on the putting green working on my short game.
By the time I got to highschool, I was pretty damn good. Over my 4 years, I averaged a 35 and had numerous scholarship offers.
However I was burnt out on golf.
And decided not to play in college.
That was pretty much the last time I played golf seriously.
I’ve played a par 3 course a few times since then.
Or gone to TopGolf with buddies…
But I’ve never gotten back into it in a serious way.
Every once in a while I have thoughts of getting jumping back in, but I’m not good at casually doing that with golf.
I know as soon as I jump back in, I’m all-in, and I’ll be playing 7 days a week.
Hopefully one day I can get back to it, and simply enjoy it without being obsessive about it.

3. A lot of people are surpised when I tell them that I was really short growing up.
When I graduated highschool I was like 5’1 and 105 lbs.
I never expected to grow…
I just assumed I was gonna be the “short guy” my whole life.
But I had a late growth spurt (mostly due to my Crohn’s disease stunting my growth).
My freshman year of college I wound up growing like 8 inches.
And then the year after that I grew another 3 inches.
Now-a-days I’m 6’0 and about 180 lbs.
If you would have told 16 year old Justin he was gonna wind-up being 6 ft tall, I would have never believed it.

4. After I sold my business in 2017, one of the things I wanted to do was help my dad retire early.
My dad works a pretty tough factory job where they make conveyor belts for the coal industry.
During the summer it’s 100 degrees in the plant…
So I figured he’d be itching to get out of there.
But that wasn’t the case.
He told me he appreciated the gesture, but he wasn’t ready to retire.
I assumed the allure of being able to quit that job and play golf everyday would have been right up his alley…
But I guess not…
Although he just told me about a week ago that he’s going to retire this summer, so I’m happy he’s doing that.

5. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life for the longest time.
When I enrolled at Ohio State my first major was “graphic design”. So I was put in the dorm with all the other art majors.
After about fives months of this, I quickly realized I was not like them.
I didn’t spend all my free time playing with photoshop…
Or going to art exhibits.
It was just something I was mildly into.
So I switched majors to “sports and leisure studies” (yes thats a real major).
It was basically me and all the football players in that major.
My thought was that I liked sports, so maybe I could be a sports agent.
Or I could work for an NBA team.
But I ran into similar issues in that major…
Most of the people in my major we’re already working for the Ohio State athletic department.
Or they were integrated into highschool teams.
I realized I wasn’t really into it as much as I thought I was.
So I started looking for something else to do.
Around this same time, I got into making websites.
Most of what I was making didn’t amount to anything.
But it did lead me to affiliate marketing…
And SEO…
And eventually copywriting.
I realized when I started making sites, that I was really passionate about doing my own thing.
That was the first time I felt motivated…
And interested in something.
I loved not having to take orders from others.
I loved that I didnt have to do things a certain way.
It was all on me.
I think this is a pretty common feeling among most entrepreneurs.
We want the freedom of choice to do what we want.
And we’re willing to bet on ourselves to make that happen.

That’s a little peek into a few things about me that you might not know.
