An email rolled in last night from a copywriter named Greg Allerton asking…
“What’s the best way for a copywriter to get a % of the revenue I generate for my client”?
Great question.
And here’s my thoughts…
Most copywriter’s dream of % based deals like this.
So instead of getting a flat fee of $100 an email…
Or $5000 for a sales page…
With the % deal, you might get 20% of the $50,000 in sales that your copy generates (so you get paid $10,000).
Which is great.
The big benefit of a % deal is that you get to partake in the upside if your copy does well.
So if you knock it out of the park…
You get a big payday.
Sounds pretty good, right?
The only problem with deals like this is that most clients are hesitant to do ’em.
Why?
Because unless you’re a top tier, A-list copywriter, your client can easily find another copywriter who will do the job for a flat fee.
So you don’t have a lot of leverage to negotiate a % deal.
However…
There is a situation where average copywriters (and even newer copywriters) can negotiate a % deal with their clients.
And that’s when you’re the one bringing a NEW idea to the client…
When you bring a NEW idea to the client that can make them money, they’ll be much more interested in doing a % deal.
Why?
Because they’ll see the new idea as “extra” money.
This isn’t money they were expecting to make.
It’s like a bonus.
And if that’s the case…
Many people will be glad to give you a % of the sales you generate.
I’ll give you an example of how to set this up…
Let’s say you write emails for a coach who teaches women how to start their first business…
So you’re writing an email for her each day…
You’re promoting her courses…
And talking about her coaching programs…
But then you go to her and say “hey I’m noticing that a lot of people are having trouble coming up with an idea for what their business should be about. We should do a 1-day training on this topic on Zoom and sell it to the list. I think the list would eat it up.”
If she’s smart, she’ll appreciate you bringing this up and agree to it.
Then you go on with “Since this is a new idea and it’s “extra money” for you, I’d love to do this on a % basis where I only get paid if it does well. Basically I’ll handle setting everything up, I’ll promote it to the list, and all you need to do is show up on the call and teach”
That’s the whole pitch.
And like I said, most clients will be open to this cause you’re bringing them a NEW idea that will generate extra money for them.
And if you frame it in a way that shows them they won’t have to do anything except show up and teach…
They’ll be much more likely to say “yes”.
Cause it’s not a lot of work…
And it sounds like easy money (which it is).
Honestly getting a client to do something like this is not rocket science.
Any copywriter with a little ambition can make it happen.
The bigger issue is knowing HOW to run the promo once the client says yes.
Like how do you pick the right topic for the Zoom call…
What do you say in the emails…
How many emails do you send…
All that stuff is super, super important.
