At the beginning of 2021, I wrote out a big list of my goals for the year…
Last night before I went to bed I was reviewing them to see how I’m doing…
I think you’ll find these interesting…
So I’m gonna share what the goals are, and how I’m progressing now that we’re 5 months into the year…
Let’s dig in…
Financial goals
– $1.5 – $2 million in pre-tax income
I should hit this goal if things continue as they’re going right now. This would have been easier if I kept doing my prnt newsletter, but I shut that down in April cause it was taking up too much of my time.
Last year I made around $1.8 million, so if I’m somewhere around there this year, I’m happy
– Invest $115k into a defined benfit plan
This is still being setup, but I’ll have money in there before September. The DBP allows me to sock away a big chunk of money and lower my tax bill, so I’m all for it.
– Diversify into crypto and real estate
My original plan for 2021 was to go all in on real estate to help diversify the money I have in stocks.
However I got into crypto back in December, and the more I’ve learned about it, I’m convinced it’s a once in a decade kind of opportunity. I started at about 5% of my portfolio in crypto, but now it’s closer to 20%.
I’m thinking I will see how things play out this year, and maybe next year is when I put more money into real estate.
Overall I’m super happy with how my crypto investments have panned out so far.
So those were my financial goals for the year.
They’re all doing well, so that’s good.
Let’s look at some of my other goals…
Relationships
I mentioned in a previous email that I had a big “ah ha” moment last year when I realized that making another $200k a year wouldn’t change my life as much as it would if I found the right partner that I want to spend time with.
I’ve done the short-term dating thing for the last five years. Had a lot of fun doing it, but I’m not really interested in that anymore.
I want to find someone that I can go deeper with. Someone I can travel the world with. Someone who supports me, and I support them.
So I’ve been more intentional about this in 2021.
I’ve set aside more time for dating…
And not focusing on work so much.
I haven’t found the future “Mrs. Goff” yet, but just the fact that I’ve been a lot more proactive about it so far has been a big win for me.
Being More Social
I’m naturally very introverted and love to be alone.
However…
Part of me also loves doing things with friends.
Whether that’s paddleboarding…
Hanging at the park…
Or having dinner together.
So one of my big goals for 2021 was to be more social.
And I’ve done a good job of this through 5 months.
I hosted a NYE party at my house which was fun and I met a lot of new people.
I’ve had a few dinners for entrepreneurs…
I hosted yoga at my house last month for like 13 people.
So this is going well.
And I plan on doing more of it this year.
I definitely get a lot more out of these smaller, curated groups than I do meeting random people at bars.
Fulfillment
I probably get the most fulfillment in my life from helping rescue dogs find loving homes.
So I work with a few dog rescues to help them do this.
Sometimes I help them with fundraising…
Other times I help with transporting dogs to their new homes.
One of my goals is to get more involved with the dogs though and spend more time with them 1-on-1.
I haven’t taken that step yet, but it’s on my list of things to do.
Breaks/Vacations
One of my goals for 2021 was to take 3 non-working vacations.
I already took one vacation in March when I went to Cabo with a few friends.
I have another one planned for July 4th weekend.
And then I’ll probably do a vacation over Christmas as well to somewhere warm.
This is all new for me.
I was never the kind of guy who went on vacation.
And it’s why I got burnt out so many times in the past.
So I’m being more proactive this year with it.
I scheduled all three of these.
I won’t be working during them…
Or answering emails…
Just relaxing.
I can tell you from the first vacation that I took, I came back more energized, and more focused than ever before.
So if you’re not taking breaks, I highly suggest you add those in.
They’re good for your soul.
Alright we got one more goal here to discuss…
Donations
I donate a decent amount of my time (and money) to charities.
I write fundraising letters for dog rescues…
And as I mentioned earlier, I help with transporting dogs when they need someone.
But this year I’d like to step up my efforts when it comes to donating money.
I don’t have a specific number of what I want to donate, but thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of $50k more than what I usually donate.
Most of this will go to dog rescues.
And I’m excited to do it.
So there ya go…
Thats a little overview of my goals for 2021.
As you can see I’m doing well in some, ok in others, and not making much progress in a few of them.
Which is fine.
I’m not gonna beat myself up over that.
My big thing is that I’m trying to hit goals in the areas that really matter to ME.
That’s the key.
Hope this was helpful, and you got a nugget or two out of it that you can use in your own life.
Enjoy your Monday…
