One of the most important things I’ve learned from my coach, Brent, is that most of your beliefs about money are simply things your parents believed (and you wind-up inheriting those beliefs without giving any thought to whether or not they’re true).
Case in point…
I grew up in Sandusky, Ohio where everyone has a blue-collar mentality.
So my parents believed things like…
– rich people are assholes
– you make more money by staying at the same job and putting in your 30 years
– money isn’t easy to make
– if you’re rich you probably screwed someone over to get there
– $50,000 is a lot of money
– people who sell stuff are sleazy
– the only way to get rich is to get lucky or to win the lottery
– money doesn’t grow on trees
– if you make “too much” money, you’re greedy
They had all kinds of beliefs like this.
And those beliefs trickled down into my little brain when I was a kid.
So by the time I was in my early 20’s and trying to make my own money, a lot of these beliefs held me back.
For example, the “rich people are assholes” belief was a big one for me.
I remember believing this through and through when I was younger.
And when I started trying to make my own money…
It held me back.
Why?
Well, cause I wanted to make a lot of money…
But if I did that, it’d mean that I would be an asshole too!
And I didn’t want that.
I’d rather be honorable and broke.
That’s the way I looked at it.
So even though I was trying to make money…
I felt like I had a 500 lb mental weight pushing back on me with everything I did.
So it was a constant struggle.
And really it was only when I started hanging around rich people more often, that I started to change that belief.
After hanging around them, I realized pretty quickly that they weren’t assholes.
They were pretty generous (at least the ones I was around).
And in fact…
They were a lot nicer than the people I grew up with who called them assholes.
Seriously, most of the people I grew up with were the real assholes.
They were always miserable…
And complaining about something…
But most of the rich people I spent time with weren’t like this.
They had a good outlook on life…
And were fun to be around.
So the idea that they were this evil, Scrooge-like asshole just wasn’t true.
Yet that’s what I believed for so many years.
Why?
Cause my parents believed it.
And they instilled that in me.
Point being…
Most of the beliefs you have about money right now came from your parents.
But here’s the thing…
You don’t have to believe what your parents believed about money.
You can have your OWN beliefs.
One’s that ring true for YOU.
That’s a very simple idea…
But it’s one that can have a huge affect on your money-making capabilities.
So my advice?
Start breaking away from the bad money beliefs that weren’t yours to begin with.
And you’ll find that making money becomes a lot easier.
Make sense?
I hope so.
Cause that’s all I got for ya this morning.
Enjoy your Thursday,
– Justin
