In July of 2010 my life pretty much hit rock bottom.
I was living in an apartment in Columbus, Ohio that I paid $250 for in rent.
My room was basically a closet that had been converted into a bedroom.
I had about $2000 to my name (maybe even less).
I was living with my girlfriend at the time. It was me her and our 2 great danes (George and Dempsey).
Even though our situation wasn’t great, I was still getting by.
I had one freelance client who paid me like $3500 a month.
That was enough for me to pay my bills and to eat.
But I wasn’t really pushing myself…
I was just content.
However this all came crashing down very, very quickly.
Cause in the span of about a week my entire life fell apart.
My one client who was 90% of my income decided he didn’t need me anymore, so he fired me.
And then about two days later…
My girlfriend came home from her bartending job one night, sat on our bed and told me that she didn’t want to be with me anymore.
I was devastated.
I didn’t see it coming at all.
We had been together for almost 3 years.
And I planned on proposing to this girl.
But she didn’t see it that way.
So in the span of 3 days I lost all of my income, and my girlfriend.
I remember after I helped her move out, my entire apartment was bare.
All the furniture was hers.
The bed, the couch, the tv…everything.
So I was sleeping on a blow-up mattress in the middle of the living room.
And the worst part was that it had a hole in it (from my dog George trying to get on it).
So every 2-3 hours during the night, I’d wake up and I’d be sleeping on the floor cause the blow-up mattress was deflated.
So I had to get up and pump the thing back up all night.
Talk about a nightmare.
I felt like shit.
I wasn’t sleeping.
I was lonely…
Drinking too much…
And only had my dogs to console me.
This is when I seriously started to doubt myself as an entrepreneur.
I thought I didn’t have what it took.
I thought I had just gotten lucky before.
I was seriously considering getting a real job, and just giving this whole thing up.
I even spoke to my aunt, who ran an ecommerce company to see if I could work for her.
I was in a bad spot…
And for the first time, I didn’t think I’d be able to claw my way out.
I basically had a month or so worth of money left to live on.
And no prospects of future income on the horizon.
So with nothing to lose, I decided to go all in on launching a product I had been sitting on for nearly 5 months.
It was a fitness ebook called the 31 Day Fat Loss Cure.
The product was done…
A lot of the copy was written…
I just needed to get it up, and start running some traffic to it.
So I busted my ass and got to work.
And within a week or so I had the whole VSL recorded, website setup and even some Facebook ads running.
At first I played it very safe…
I was spending $10 a day on ads.
And I didn’t dare spend anymore than that.
Especially cause nobody was buying those first few days.
I thought about turning the ads off.
And just giving up on it…
But about a week later I saw a ray of hope.
In my email was a merchant account notification.
It was the first sale.
Someone had actually bought the course.
Which was insane to me.
I didn’t think it was possible.
And then a day later, I sold another one.
At this point I decided to start testing some new ads…
And some new formats for the VSL…
And guess what?
Within about a month I was spending $100 a day on ads and pretty much breaking even.
I was financing all this on a credit card, so everyday I’d get up and pray that it worked.
But I could see a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel.
Sales were coming in (slowly).
So I decided to make a bold move and spend more on ads.
I slowly increased the daily spend.
Soon it was $200 a day…
Then it was $500 a day…
And the conversions kept coming in.
I started to actually have a little bit of money.
And was able to pay my bills (along with some freelancing gigs I picked up)
Fast forward about 2 months, and the 31 Day Fat Loss Cure was firing on all cylinders…
I was spending $5000 a day on ads at it’s peak (which was the max my FB account would allow).
And I was banking about $2000 a day in profit.
It was a huge winner.
And that helped me put $103,000 in profit into my bank account in less than 90 days.
Which was life changing for me.
I wasn’t living month to month anymore…
I was able to actually move into a decent apartment.
And splurge on Chipotle once in a while.
Like I said this was back in 2010…
And getting that offer to scale truly changed my life.
Cause it showed me what was possible when you can make an offer convert on cold traffic.
I went from probably the lowest point in my life…
Where I was lonely, depressed and scared my life was over…
To clawing my way out of that hole and doing something I never thought I could do.
And that experience convinced me that getting an offer to convert on cold traffic is truly the “holy grail” of marketing.
That’s how you scale…
That’s how you help a TON of people…
And that’s how you make more money than you ever dreamed possible.
Cause that’s what happened for me.
