Seven years ago, I got a magalog in the mail with a brilliant headline that said…
“Forbidden Fruit” Once Reserved For Chinese Emperors Restores Youthful Energy, Vitality And Sex Drive”
I was immediately sucked in.
So I started reading.
The story was all about a Chinese Emperor who had a harem of over 100 different women.
And this emperor would spend the night with 10+ women each night.
It was his “royal duty” to satisfy them all.
But he was struggling to do so.
So the emperor turned to legendary Chinese herbalist, Shen Nong for answers.
Shen apparently was able to create a powerful mushroom tea that helped the emperor to stay energized and virile all night long.
Honestly the story was brilliant.
I believe it was written by the great A-lister, Mr. Parris Lampropoulos.
But that’s not even the most important part…
Cause what came after the emperor’s story is the part that made me millions of dollars over the years.
When I got to page 4 of the copy, Parris started introducing the mushroom supplement that the direct mail piece was selling.
And while I was reading it, I quickly realized I had read this copy somewhere before.
I didn’t know where…
But I knew it sounded familiar.
All the stuff about cordyceps, turkey tail etc…
So I tore through my big box of direct mail pieces to see if I could find where I read it before.
After about 40 minutes of digging, low and behold I found it.
However it wasn’t the same letter.
This one did not have the Chinese Emperor story as the lead.
It had a completely different lead.
This lead was all about a Himalayan Sherpa who had the secret to getting back the energy you had in your 30’s and 40’s.
It was in this moment that it clicked for me.
These two direct mail pieces were the exact same from page 4-24.
Parris simply changed the first 4 pages (the lead).
And now he had a sales letter that looked totally different…
But in reality it was just a new lead!
This was a gamechanging moment for me.
Cause up until this point I never tested leads…
I just re-wrote the entire offer.
Little did I know that I was doing way too much work.
And now-a-days I take full advantage of just how powerful a new lead can be.
For example…
One of the leads I helped VShred with last year got them a ~60% boost in conversions and allowed them to scale a pretty medicore offer to 500-1000 sales a day.
Before the new lead, the offer was doing like 10 sales a day.
But with a new lead, I helped them write…
It now does 500-1000 sales per day.
That’s the power of a good lead.
