“I don’t know how to say this, but I met someone else”
I still remember when my ex, Lyndsey, said this to me back in 2010.
We had been broken up for a month…
And I was a wreck…
I couldn’t eat…
I barely slept…
I spent my entire day thinking about her…
So I was trying everything I could to win her back.
I got a UHAUL and helped her move into her new house…
I came over on Saturdays and helped her do yardwork at her new place…
I even babysat her dog when she was at school…
I was doing everything I could think of to help her.
And I thought I was making good progress.
But then out of nowhere…
She dropped a bomb on me.
“I don’t know how to say this, but I met someone else”
I remember feeling like someone had punched me in the stomach.
I wanted to curl up in a corner and die.
Here I was putting in all this effort…
And being the “perfect guy”…
Yet the whole time she was with someone else.
But here’s the worst part…
The guy she was with wasn’t some normal dude…
He was a 6’7” pitcher for the Cleveland Indians!
So this dude was a pro athlete…
He was tall…
Jacked…
And rich as hell.
Which made me feel like a complete schmuck.
Cause I could barely scrape enough money together to pay my bills…
And this guy was flying her first class to all his games…
Putting her up in 5-star hotels…
And giving her the world…
I couldn’t have felt more worthless.
And everytime I thought about her with him, it made me really doubt myself.
Why?
Cause the whole time we were together she hated the idea of me being an entrepreneur.
She was always nagging me to get a “real job”.
So after everything fell apart…
And I was sitting by myself in my apartment eating Ramen noddles…
I started to wonder if maybe she was right…
Maybe I wasn’t cut out to be an entrepreneur…
Maybe I didn’t have what it took…
I was really doubting myself.
But as bad as that was…
And as much as I felt like I was at “rock bottom”…
Little did I know that this would end up being a good thing for me in the end.
Why?
Cause all that heartbreak became the fuel I needed to get my ass in gear, and build my first email list.
It’s true.
I had no money…
No girl…
And nothing to lose…
So I said “screw it”…
And went all in on building an email list for myself.
This was something I had wanted to do for months and months.
But I was too scared to get started.
But now that my back was against the wall…
I really had nothing to lose.
My opt-in page was already done.
I just needed to get it up, and start getting traffic.
So I busted my ass and got to work.
And like most people…
I struggled in the beginning.
I didn’t know what I was doing.
So I made every mistake in the book…
But eventually…
Things started to click…
And my email list grew from nothing…
To 40 people…
Then it grew to 1189 people…
And by the end of the year, my list had exploded to a little over 37,000 people.
Which was insane.
But what’s even crazier…
Is that my list ended up making me around $210,000 in profit that year.
Which was life changing money for me at the time.
I didn’t have to live in the disgusting $250 a month basement apartment I was in….
And I could finally stop eating Ramen three times a day.
So my life wound up doing a complete 180.
I went from heartbroken and dead broke…
To now making multiple 6-figures…
And the reason I was able to do that…
Was because I got serious about building an email list.
That was the key.
I stopped fartin around with everything else…
And I just focused on building an email list.
And here’s the kicker…
I’m proud to say I did all of that without anyone knowing who I was.
In 2010, I wasn’t the “Justin Goff” you know today.
I was a nobody.
There were no big affiliates helping me…
Or people mentoring me.
So I had to do everything on my own.
Yet, I was still able to build my first email list from nothing to 37,000 people…
And completely change my life in the process…
