Last night copywriting legend Dan Ferrari was in town…
So me, him, and two of my buddies decided to grab some steaks together…
The restaurant we chose was Bob’s Steaks and Chops in downtown Austin.
Which is a dimly-lit, old-school kind of steakhouse.
The kind of spot where lawyers and businessman hang out after work.
I got there around 7ish and grabbed us a table.
Shortly after, Dan and my friends Tanner and Blake strolled in.
Dan was in town to work with Brent (the coach that I work with as well).
So he was telling us about how his weekend went.
After that, the conversation went in a million different directions.
And we hit on damn near every topic under the sun…
– diets and how we eat
– surfing in Hawaii
– Dan’s time at the Motley Fool
– crypto
– our parents retiring
– why men are so addicted to work & success
– keto
– COVID vaccines
– our relationships with women
– why we live where we live
– the virtue signaling that goes along with many of the health trends today
– which parent we talk to when we call home
– plus a whole lot more…
It was one of those nights I didn’t want to end…
The conversation was flowing…
And we talked about some deep stuff.
Finally around 9:45, I was hitting a wall.
So we called it a night.
What’s interesting is that I woke up this morning and couldn’t stop thinking about some of the convos we had last night.
If you’ve ever met Dan, he is a genuinely smart dude.
And he can talk about anything.
This is something I’ve noticed with a lot of the successful copywriters and marketers I know.
They are genuinely curious about a lot of different topics.
They can talk about World War 2, vitamin D levels, and NFT’s all in the same night.
And I’m convinced this makes them better at marketing.
Cause it gives them more ideas…
More analogies…
And a better overall view of the world.
So if I could give you a little takeaway from my dinner with Dan, it would be to try and seek out things you are genuinely curious about.
That might be photography…
It might be endangered animals…
Maybe it’s obscure books from the 1800’s…
Whatever it is, being curious about things will expand your mind and give you more ideas.
And in the end, it will make you a much better marketer.
That’s my 2 cents.
Hope you enjoy your Wednesday.
