One of my biggest learnings of 2021 was about money.
Specifically that people who ignore money, refuse to talk about it, and generally have no interest in learning how money works…usually don’t have much money.
For example…
I know a guy (let’s call him Jack) who refuses to talk about money with his wife.
Talking about what they can spend on a vacation? Not interested.
Talking about the student loans they have? Nope.
Talking about how they’re going to invest for their family? Nope again.
Basically if it’s about money he doesn’t want to talk about it.
Why?
I have my theories…
I know Jack grew up in a very religious family.
And talking about money in their family was a “no no”.
It was seen as “wrong”.
So they never did it.
Which frankly is insane.
Whatever your thoughts are on money, the reality is that it’s an important part of life.
It affects you, your spouse, your kids…
There’s decisions to be made about debt, spending, living expenses, splurges, retirement, helping family members etc…
There’s a lot going on.
So simply ignoring it…
And not talking about is nuts.
That would be like never talking to your wife about your relationship and simply “hoping” that things work out.
Good luck with that.
Anyways…
The big point that I want to make here is this…
If you want to have more money…
If you want to feel in control of your money…
Then you need to learn about it.
And I understand this can seem scary.
I didn’t know a damn thing about investing until 2016 or so.
It frankly was confusing to me…
And scary…
So I just ignored it.
But once I dove in…
And really studied things like investing, saving and spending…
I realized it’s pretty simple.
And I’m in a much better spot today than I was five years ago because of what I learned.
I can guarantee that if you always ignore money…
And never take the time to learn about it…
You’ll struggle with it.
That’s the truth.
This is something that became very clear to me in 2021 after watching a few people I know go through this.
So let them be a cautionary tale for you.
Money is going to be in your life every single day until the day you die.
So it’s worth learning what to do with it.
