This question from Amanda came into my inbox this morning (and it fits nicely with what Ive been talking about in regards to making a lot of dough while not being miserable)

Hi Justin! I’m wondering if you’ve ever felt guilty about how much money you make?
My income from writing copy nearly doubled this past year from $80k to about $155k. Which is great, but I’m noticing that I’m feeling a lot of guilt about making this much money.
I remember you mentioning you dealt with something similar in a previous email. Would love to hear your advice if you have any

In my 20’s I really struggled with feeling guilty about making more money, so here’s my thoughts…
The big thing for me was simply understanding that if you make more money (as long as you’re not ripping people off or stealing from them) then you are doing a GOOD thing.
You’re not taking more than your “fair share”.
You’re not selfish for making more money.
If you were to make less money than you are now, that wouldn’t somehow make you a better person.
The thing to remember is that there is plenty of money in the world.
And it’s always exchanging hands.
There’s not some fixed pie of money.
And here’s a truth that took me a long time to realize…
The more money you make, the more you help others.
As you make more, you’ll start to do things that you couldn’t do before.
Like donating more money to charity…
Or hiring an assistant…
Or a housekeeper…
By making more money, you’re helping all these people that you wouldn’t have been able to help before.
So when you make more money not only is it better for you (and your family)…
It’s also better for others as well.
if you decided to start making $40k a year instead of $160k, you wouldn’t be making life better for yourself or for others.
So my advice is quite simple.
If you want to make more money, then keep doing it.
You’re not only doing something good for yourself…
But you’re doing something good for the people around you as well.
So there’s no need to feel guilty about it.
Make sense?
I hope so.
Cause that’s all I got for ya today.
Hope you enjoyed this little series this week.
I’ll be taking tomorrow off, so I’ll talk to ya on Sunday.
Enjoy your weekend…
