A question came in from copywriter Robby Alexander last night asking if I could share some real-world examples of proven hooks to use in emails…

Your emails this week on hooks have been very helpful.  I guess I didn’t realize how important the hook was until I saw you lay it out in clear terms.

With that said, would you mind sharing some real-world examples of email hooks we could use?

Sure thing. 

Let’s look at one of my favorite hooks…

The contrarian hook.

This one stands out, because you’re basically going against what everyone else in your niche is saying.

So if everyone in your niche is screaming “keto, keto, keto”…

And then you write an email titled “the case against keto”, it’s gonna pique their interest.

That’s what the contrarian hook is all about.

I’ll give you another example… 

Back in April when I promoted Brent Charleton’s mindset course, I knew contrarian emails would work really well.

Why?

Because during that launch, multiple affiliates in the copywriting space were promoting the course… 

Ian Stanley promoted it…

Dan Ferrari sent a bunch of emails for it…

Jason Capital ran a webinar for it…

So a lot of people on those lists were seeing those guys sing the praises of Brent.

So what did I do?

I went the opposite way.

I wrote a bunch of contrarian emails like…

– the case against Brent Charleton

– is Brent Charleton a SCAM?

– 3 types of people that Brent’s method WON’T work for

So instead of simply singing the praises of Brent like everyone else, I showed some of the “downsides” of using Brent’s method.

For example…

In one of my emails, I talked about how Brent’s method does work really well for getting rid of money blocks, writer’s block, procrastination, imposter syndrome and more…

However…

It can also be uncomfortable and stir up a lot of emotions. 

It’s not like a Tony Robbins seminar where you’re dancing in the aisles and having fun.

His work is a lot deeper than that.

And it forces you to confront uncomfortable stuff about your childhood, your parents and how you were raised. 

So I talked about all that in my email…

I showed the “downsides” of using Brent’s method.

And then at the end of the email…

I brought it back to the positive by saying “even though Brent’s method can be uncomfortable, it’s changed my life more than ayahuasca, therapy or Tony Robbins ever did. And I still use Brent’s correction method to this day because it continues to help me get past mental blocks I have with writing, success, procrastination and more”.

So I sent numerous emails like that…

And guess what?

Those contrarian emails absolutely crushed.

Out of the 16 emails I sent during the launch, the contrarian ones were all in the top 5 in terms of sales. 

Why?

Because they went “against the grain”.

So people felt like they had to read them.

Point being…

Writing your emails…

And making sales with email…

Becomes quite easy when you use proven hooks (like the contrarian hook). 

A good hook will make or break your email. 

So you’d be smart to put more focus on coming up with good hooks. 

Obviously you can do this on your own, and test different hooks to see what works…
