Last summer I was having dinner with a fairly well known copywriter, and I asked him how his client work was going…
His response?
“I’m just sick of it all”
I was not expecting him to say this…
I always thought this guy loved writing…
So I dug in and asked him what he meant…
He went on…
“I’m sick of sitting on their pointless Zoom calls…
I’m sick of writing 10 hours a day…
I’m sick of fishing for clients…
I’m sick of the never-ending hampster wheel of trading time for money…
I’m just done with it all”
Yikes.
This guy was obviously frustrated…
And venting…
But he’s not the first copywriter I’ve heard this from.
It’s quite common.
So if I was in his shoes…
And I was fed up with client work…
Here’s what I’d do…
I’d start plotting my escape from client work.
How?
By building my own list.
I’d find a niche I was really interested in…
Something that I naturally enjoyed talking about…
And I’d start building a list in that niche.
Is this gonna make me rich overnight?
No.
But I’d start small.
I’d probably make a few hundred bucks a month at the start…
Then a few thousand…
Then eventually I’d be able to drop a few clients…
And at some point, the money I was making from my list would eclipse what I’m making with client work…
And at that point, I’d say “sayonara” to clients altogether.
That would be myentire plan.
Which is pretty similar to what I did back in 2010 when I made the jump from freelancing to having my own list.
I never regretted that.
Cause I finally didn’t have to take orders from anyone…
Or try and please clients.
Plus, I pulled in over $210k that year from my list…
So it was a smart decision.
Point being…
If you’re a solid copywriter and you’re sick of the grind of client work…
I’d suggest starting your own list.
