One of the big topics in copywriting groups on FB these days is “what’s gonna happen if we wind-up in a recession?”
It’s freaking people out…
I even saw one guy say there was going to be a “copywriter bloodbath” later this year.
He may be right.
Or he might just enjoy playing Dr. Doom.
Either way, people are worried right now…
So I want to share a few of my thoughts on where I see things going in the next 12-18 months.
Let’s dig in…
If I had to describe the general feeling I see, it would be “uncertainty”.
Despite the low unemployment numbers in the economy…
Things just feel shaky.
Why?
Well the cost of everything is going up…
A steak that was $12 last year is now $20…
If you fill up your car, you’re looking at $100 (or more) in most places.
And the price of rent just keeps ticking up all across the country.
So all-in-all, people have less money.
And they can feel it.
Which is why there’s uncertainty.
Now my belief is that this will have an effect on the direct response industry.
Specifically for copywriters…
Why?
Because most business owners tend to pull back during turbulent times (even if that’s the wrong thing to do).
They run less ads…
They put out less offers…
And they try to live off the in-house customers that they already have.
Which is not a great situation for copywriters.
Cause it means they’ll hire less writers.
Sure, they may have one on retainer…
Or have 1-2 in-house that do everything…
But they won’t be hiring a bunch of new ones to create new offers, or to refresh their Facebook ads.
So that’s an issue.
